There’s something satisfying about making your own kitchen staples from scratch. Whether it’s homemade broth, freshly ground flour, or a simple spice blend. One of my favorite pantry staples to make is homemade seasoned salt—it’s quick to mix up, endlessly versatile, and so much better than anything you’ll find in the store.

Store-bought seasoning blends often come with unnecessary additives, anti-caking agents, and mystery ingredients. This seasoned salt recipe is one I reach for daily, whether I’m seasoning roasted vegetables or rubbing it onto a roast before it goes into the oven.

If you’ve never made your own seasoning blends before, this is a great place to start. It comes together in just a few minutes and can be easily customized to suit your taste.

Why Make Your Own Seasoned Salt?

For me, the decision to make something at home always comes down to the same thing.  I get to control the ingredients.  I don’t have to worry about artificial flavour, colours or preservatives.

Another reason why you should try making your own seasoned salt is that you get to control the flavour of your salt.  My family doesn’t love celery seeds and finding a blend without celery is tricky.  So I kept that in mind when I was coming up with this seasoned salt recipe.

Making your own seasoning blend at home can also be more cost-effective compared to those tiny store bought bottles.  Especially if you are in the habit of purchasing your salt and spices in bulk.

Essential Ingredients for Homemade Seasoned Salt

• Sea Salt – The base of the blend; provides a natural, clean saltiness.  But feel free to substitute whatever type of real salt you prefer.

• Granulated Garlic – Adds depth and savory richness

• Smoked Paprika – Gives a mild, smoky flavour and beautiful colour.  Feel free to use a mild or hot paprika here.  This is a chance for you to make the homemade seasoned salt to suit your family’s tastes.

• Ground Mustard – Offers a slight tang and warmth

• Onion Powder – Enhances the umami and savoriness

• Oregano – Adds a subtle herbal note.  If you prefer a different herb you could try any other woody herb.  If you choose something like rosemary, just be sure to grind it up so that you don’t end up eating whole pieces of it.

Customize Your Blend

• Add black pepper or cayenne for extra heat

• Swap oregano for thyme or rosemary for a different herbal note

• add celery or fennel seeds for a herbaceous flavour

Seasoned Salt Recipe

Ingredients:

• ¼ cup smoked paprika (mild)

• 4 tsp ground mustard

• 4 tsp onion powder

• 2 tsp oregano

Instructions:

1. In a mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients.

2. Stir well to ensure an even distribution of flavours.

3. Store in an airtight container, such as a glass jar, to maintain freshness.

Storage Tips for Maximum Freshness

You should keep your homemade seasoned salt in your favourite airtight container. Like all your other herbs and seasonings, it will store best in a cool, dark place—or at the very least, out of direct sunlight.

The homemade seasoned salt is best used within 6 – 12 months for optimal freshness

Ways to Use Homemade Seasoned Salt

So you made the seasoning salt… now what?  Well, you can use this salt almost anywhere you would use regular salt in your savoury cooking.   Here are a few of my favourite ways to use the homemade seasoned salt.

• Sprinkle on roasted vegetables for added depth

• Use as a rub for meats, poultry, or fish

• Season homemade fries or popcorn for a gourmet touch

• Mix into salad dressings or dips

Making homemade seasoned salt is simple, cost-effective, and a great way to customize your cooking.  Feel free to take this recipe and make it your own.  That is why we do this homemade thing.
