There’s something satisfying about simplifying your hair care routine with ingredients you can recognize—and even grow yourself. This homemade rosemary mint hair oil has become a favourite in our home, especially when the dry air starts to take a toll on my scalp and hair. It’s easy to make, smells refreshing, and gives my hair that healthy shine without any synthetic ingredients or mystery additives. Whether you’re looking to soothe a dry scalp, strengthen your hair, or just enjoy a little extra nourishment, this is a simple recipe that works—and it only takes a few ingredients to get started.

Why Use Rosemary and Mint for Hair?
I don’t know about you, but Rosemary and Mint was always my favourite shampoo scent, back when I used to buy scented shampoo. Now that I am aware of just how harmful artificial fragrance can be, I was looking for something that could replace my favourite scent.
I love the cool, refreshing, almost tingling sensation that this herbal combination has.
Here are a couple of reasons why you might want to consider adding rosemary mint hair oil to your weekly routine.
Rosemary is known for stimulating circulation, reducing dandruff, and promoting hair growth.
Mint gives this hair oil that refreshing feeling, while it’s soothing for the scalp, and helps with oil balance.
Some other benefits of this hair oil are that it could strengthen hair strands, reduce breakage, and provide a natural shine.

How to Make Homemade Rosemary Mint Hair Oil
Making this natural hair oil recipe couldn’t be easier. You just have a couple of small decisions to make.
The first decision is the kind of carrier oil you want to use. I have very fine hair, so I often use the hair oil as more of a treatment before I shampoo. I know that my skin loooooves olive oil, so that is the carrier oil I prefer to use.
The good news is that if you make the rosemary mint hair oil and don’t love your carrier oil, you can always try again.
Your next big decision (whispers…it’s really not that big) is how long you are willing to wait for your hair oil to be ready. I have outlined two different infusion methods below, cold and warm, so you just pick the one that suits your timeline. I am personally a cold infusion kind of gal, I like to set it and forget it, if you will.
Option 1: Cold Infusion Method (Slow & Gentle)
1. Place equal amounts of rosemary and mint in a clean glass jar. Don’t fill the jar more than halfway if you are using dried herbs. There needs to be room for them to expand as they rehydrate.
2. Pour the carrier oil over the herbs, ensuring they are fully submerged.
3. Seal the jar and let it sit in a warm place for 2-4 weeks.
4. Shake the jar every few days.
5. Strain the oil and transfer it to a clean dropper bottle.
Option 2: Warm Infusion Method (Quicker Alternative)
1. Add equal parts of rosemary and mint to a small saucepan. Cover the herbs with oil. Don’t use more oil than you can store in your jar.
2. Heat on a super low for 20-30 minutes—don’t let it boil!
3. Let it cool completely before straining into a bottle.
Making your own homemade rosemary mint hair oil is really that simple. The MOST (I mean it now…) critical part of this recipe’s success is your storage container. It must be very clean and very dry. Moisture is the #1 enemy of your homemade beauty products and will cause your hair oil to spoil. So please make sure you wash and dry your glass bottle well before you put the hair oil in it.

How to Use Rosemary Mint Hair Oil
Once your homemade hair oil is ready, it is really up to you how to use it. I am a freewheeling, do-what-you-like kind of person, and don’t really want to be told what to do. But if you are happening to look for some suggestions on what you might use your hair oil for. These are some of my favourite ways.:
• Scalp Massage: Apply a few drops to a dropper full (depending on if you are washing your hair right away) to your hands and massage into the scalp to boost circulation.
• Overnight Treatment: Leave on overnight for deep conditioning. If you choose an overnight treatment, please wear a plastic shower cap to bed. The oil will stain your sheets and ruin your bedding.
• Pre-Wash Oil Treatment: This one is my favourite in the winter. When the humidity is low and the air is dry. Apply 30 minutes before washing for extra nourishment.
• Daily Shine Booster: Rub a tiny amount between your palms and smooth over ends.
Storage & Shelf Life
Like so many of the things we make here on the homestead, this DIY rosemary mint hair oil will last the longest when it is stored in a cool, dark place.
It *should* last 6 months if it is kept in a sealed container and you can keep moisture out of it. But people, PLEASE use your best judgment here. If it smells off or there are particles in your oil, please throw it out and start again.
Our homemade beauty products are best made in small batches in order to preserve their freshness. Make smaller batches, more often, and you shouldn’t have to worry about it going off.
Frequently Asked Questions
Using fresh vs. dried herbs?
If you are going to use fresh herbs, I would still leave them out on the counter to dry for a few days before making this oil. Using the dried (even partially) herbs will help reduce the risk of moisture contaminating your hair oil.
How often should I use the hair oil?
2-3 times per week is great for most hair types, but listen to your body and do what works best for you. I typically only do the pre-wash oil treatment once a week.
Can I add other herbs or oils?
Yes! Lavender or chamomile can be soothing additions.
This nourishing hair oil DIY can be a refreshing addition to your personal care routine. It’s a quick and easy upgrade to your current hair care. I personally look forward to the refreshing hair oil in the winter. It really adds brightness to my day.
I truly hope that you get a chance to try the hair oil. Let me know in the comments if you. I’d love to hear from you
