I don’t know about you, but it is still winter here (despite the spring equinox happening last week) and warm drinks are still on the menu. Enter the ginger lemon tea cube. Fresh lemon juice and ginger all together in one convenient cube ready to be turned into a delicious drink to keep you warm for these last few weeks of winter.

What is a tea cube?

A tea cube is an easy way to keep all your favourite fresh tea ingredients ready for you to use at the drop of the hat. You take the fresh ingredients you love, combine them together and add them to an ice cube tray. You place the tray in the freezer and whenever you feel like a cup of tea you pop out a cube, add it to a mug, and pour over some hot water.

My favour tea cube combination is fresh ginger and lemon. I love the warming, slightly spicy flavour of the ginger combined with the tart freshness of lemon juice.

Benefits of ginger lemon tea

Besides being delicious, ginger lemon tea can have some very helpful health benefits.

Ginger has long been celebrated for helping to boost our immune systems. It can also help alleviate nausea and ease digestive troubles.

Lemon juice is high in vitamin C, which is excellent if you plan on using your ginger lemon tea cubes to help alleviate your cold and flu symptoms.

How do you make ginger lemon tea cubes?

In order to make ginger lemon tea cubes you will need:
– fresh ginger
– lemons (or bottled lemon juice)
-salt

This isn’t really a recipe, it’s more of a process. You really can’t go wrong with the tea cubes. You can add more or less of each ingredient to your liking.

You are going to start with the ginger. Peel your fresh ginger. I like to use a spoon to do this.

Once the ginger is peeled, roughly chop it and add it to the blender. Next you are going to add lemon juice. You want to add enough lemon juice that the final mixture will be pourable, but not too liquid-y.

Finally add a pinch of salt and blend together.

Once the mixture is blended smooth, pour the ginger lemon mixture into your ice cube trays and freeze until solid. If you ice cube tray comes with a lid, cover it and leave in the freezer. If your tray does not have a lid, once the tea cubes are frozen solid, pop them out of the tray and add them a freezer bag for storage.

The ginger lemon tea cubes should last in the freezer for 6 months. But truthfully, they are so convinient and delicious that you will probably use them all up well before them.

How to use your ginger lemon tea cubes

Making a cup of tea with your ginger lemon tea cubes couldn’t be easier. Set your kettle to boil. While you wait, add one tea cube to your favourite mug.

Once the kettle has boiled, fill your mug with the warm water and add honey to taste. Then find a your favourite chair, maybe near a window, sit down and enjoy.

If you prefer your tea iced, maybe spring has actually sprung where you are, follow the instruction above but allow your tea to sit out and cool to room temperature. Once cooled, place in the fridge to chill. When you are ready, take the chilled tea from the fridge and enjoy over ice.

You could also mix the chilled ginger lemon tea with some sparkling water to make it a fun beverage for happy hour.
